Leading industry experts gathered today at Elite Plaza to discuss Armenia\u2019s accession to the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), aimed at introducing internationally unified reporting principles and approaches for the assessment of mineral reserves in the Republic of Armenia, in line with the Mining Sector Development Strategy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vardan Jhanyan, President of the Armenian Mining and Metallurgy Association and First Deputy CEO of the Zangezur Copper-Molybdenum Combine (ZCMC), told InfoPort.am that the sector development strategy adopted by the government years ago includes several key provisions, one of the most important being the alignment of Armenia\u2019s legislation with CRIRSCO geological standards, aimed at ensuring the proper development of the sector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that such alignment would enable investors worldwide to better understand Armenia\u2019s geological reports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen our industry adopts CRIRSCO standards, we will be speaking the same language as the rest of the world. In other words, our geologists will have documentation that complies with international standards,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vardan Jhanyan added that outdated Soviet-era regulations are still largely in force in Armenia today and clearly require modernization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOnce this modernization takes place, investors\u2014recognizing that modern standards are already applied in Armenia\u2019s geological reporting\u2014will fundamentally change their perception of the sector,\u201d said the First Deputy CEO of ZCMC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Currently, work on aligning the legislation has not commenced. Although joining CRIRSCO is the primary goal, it is critical to understand the process by which this will be accomplished. As Jhanyan mentioned, a working group at the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, led by Deputy Minister Asatur Vardanyan, is discussing sector-related concerns, including the transition to CRIRSCO norms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vardan Jhanyan also noted that they have researched the experiences of their Kazakh counterparts, as Kazakhstan is the only post-Soviet country to have taken this path. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“For us, this is a good example to understand how effective this approach could be for implementation in Armenia,” Jhanyan said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also noted that the objectives of joining CRIRSCO are numerous. In addition to attracting high-quality investors, the move would also improve the overall quality of reporting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf reserve estimation and reporting standards are aligned with global standards, the state will have a clear understanding of its reserves and how it can develop both the sector and the economy as a whole,\u201d Jhanyan said, emphasizing that this change is one of the first and most important steps in developing the mining sector, as geology forms the foundation of mining. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further noted that geologists and mining companies were invited to today\u2019s meeting, while mining engineers were not. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey may be invited at a later stage. Geologists have priority, which is why we met with them first,\u201d Jhanyan said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
